Sugar Land: Shape up through new website

From tips on nutrition and wellness to fitness activity listings and health product coupons, a new website the city of Sugar Land and two health advocacy groups launched Thursday promises to be a one-stop shop for information to shape up the community.
The interactive website shapeupsugarland.org is billed as a tool to promote wellness activities, events and resources and engage the community in a healthy lifestyle.
Shape Up Sugar Land features Healthy Mondays, which builds on the nationally recognized day that highlights health awareness, empowerment and action, said city spokesman Doug Adolph.
"People plan their lives around the week with Monday as the start," Mayor James Thompson said. "What if every Monday triggered and sustained healthy behaviors? Then Monday would become the day all health breaks loose."
Visitors to the website can join an e-mail list to receive updates on wellness events and information, download coupons for health-related products and services, and check out recreational and sports activities with an interactive calendar.
The website also answers wellness questions and features a youth forum designed to engage dialogues about healthy lifestyle among young people.
Funded through a grant from the Governor's Advisory Council on Physical Fitness, the website was created by the Mayor's Fitness Council contracted with Shape Up Sugar Land, a nonprofit in the city.
Shape up Sugar Land president Nicole Volek encourages non-profit organizations that are hosting health-related fundraisers to post events on the site at no charge. For-profit groups may also sign up to post events for an annual fee of $300. Call 281- 844-4982 for details.
